Trenchtown Sports: Decisions that will forever haunt fans

There have been some bizarre moves in the history of sports. The Broncos trade for Russel Wilson is pretty pathetic after just one year. We’ll see what Wilson looks like in Sean Payton’s offense. After 1 year that trade looks pretty terrible. Bill O’brien was fired shortly after his trade with Arizona. I’m sure we’re missing some but these are some of the worst we’ve seen. We’ll start it with the birth of a Dynasty.

Jerry Jones Deals Herschel Walker for a Dynasty

A 3 time All-American, a Heisman trophy, a 3 time SEC Player of the Year in college certainly gets your attention. As an encore he scores 12 TDs as a rookie and over 1500 yards in his 3rd season with the Cowboys. Herschel Walker was in his prime and doing it in Dallas. You’d think trading Herschel Walker for unproven NFL players wouldn’t really happen. That’s exactly what Jerry Jones did. However, that marked the beginning of a dynasty. The Vikings sent Dallas 5 players and 6 draft picks. The key is who the Cowboys ended up drafting with those picks. Some guys with some NFL street cred, Emmitt Smith, Darren Woodson, Russel Maryland, and Kevin Smith. That trade paved the way for the Cowboys dynasty and Walker never reached 1,000 yards in a season after he was dealt.

David Kahn Passes on Curry Twice

The Minnesota Timberwolves passed up on Steph Curry, TWICE. They held the 5th and 6th picks in the draft. To make things even worse, they took Guards with both of those picks. GM David Kahn took the Spaniard, Ricky Rubio, and Syracuse Guard, Johnny Flynn. Um, what? Combined, Rubio/Flynn have 755 3’s which is 2,635 less than Curry. Rubio/Flynn combined for 9,074 points compared to Curry’s 21,712 points. This was a colossal sized mistake made by former GM David Kahn. To those wondering if he’s still in the NBA, the answer is No. He’s now in France.

Bears trade up to draft Trubinsky, over Mahomes and Deshaun Watson

Bears traded a 1st, a 3rd, and 4th round pick to move up to No. 3 in the draft to take Mitchell Trubisky. All of this to move up 1 spot in the draft. With each passing season, this trade looks more and more horrible. We don’t need to break down the stats on this one. Mahomes has 2 rings. Trubinsky is still trying to figure it out and will be out of the league soon.

Dan Snyder is the Poster Boy on ‘How to Ruin a Franchise’

Daniel Snyder was the worst thing to ever happen to the Washington franchise. He had no problem just throwing away money on players. Albert Haynesworth is just another example after 8.5 sacks in 2008 that led to Snyder opening his check book for 7 years, $100 Million. Haynesworth only played out 2 of those seasons and the Redskins had to pay him $36 Million just to get him off the team.

Ryan Leaf for 2 1st round picks, a 2nd round pick, and a productive return Specialist

This one hurts my soul. Ryan Leaf. Did anyone realize what the Chargers gave up to move up ONE spot? They originally held the 3rd pick but instead they traded away 2 first round picks, a second round pick, and Eric Metcalf who was one of the best return specialists in football. They gave up all of that to move up 1 spot. Chargers fans are still sick about this trade. This trade set them back until they drafted LT some years later.

Ditka Goes All-In for Ricky

Mike Ditka gave away an entire draft for one player. Ricky Williams entered the NFL has one of the hottest prospects in the game and Ditka wanted him. He wanted him so bad he shows up to an Owners meeting and told everyone. They traded away every pick in the ’99 draft and a 1st and 2nd in the 2000 draft. This was when the league started to become pass-heavy. With ‘the greatest show on turf’ running the NFC at the time Ditka still wanted a lead back and was willing to sacrifice the Saints future for 1 man who didn’t really pan out until later on his career.

The Red Sox owner Harry Frazee was also a Broadway producer. He ultimately sold Babe Ruth for money to fund a Broadway production. He sold Ruth to the New York Yankees for $125,000. This was a move that changed history and the Red Sox and their fans paid the ultimate price. It took nearly a century for them to win their first World Series since the trade. This trade was when baseball became America’s Pastime.

Honorable Mention

The Colts traded a 3rd round pick and a conditional first rounder for Carson Wentz. Wentz went 9-8 as a starter for the Colts.

Allen Houston got the bag in NYC. The Knicks signed Allen Houston to a $100 Million deal. No team was going to even come close to paying him that money. This happened in 2001 and he ended up retiring in 2007 after his contract ended.

Let’s keep the ball rolling with the New York Knicks and Isaiah Thomas trading for Eddy Curry and paying him $60 Million. Curry averaged 19 points per game once, twice averaged 13 points per game, and twice under 5 points per game.

Al Davis loves to make the sexy picks. Jamarcus Russel going first overall because he had a arm. They made him the No. 1 pick over 2 future hall of famers (Calvin Johnson and Joe Thomas).

Texans HC Bill O’brien trading Deandre Hopkins for David Johnson. Johnson was on a serious decline rushing for 345 yards before the trade and Deandre Hopkins had 1165 yards receiving and 7 TDs. A bit lopsided. O’brien was fired shortly after.
