This Washington Football Team can’t be taken lightly and they are led by a true defensive-minded, tough Head Coach, Ron Rivera. So who does he take with his first pick as head coach? The best defensive player in College Football, Chase Young. Young is just the latest defensive standout to go from THE Ohio State University. Joining the Bosa brothers and many more. He had 7.5 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, and 1 TD last season. Young, Nick, and Joey Bosa all won Defensive Rookie of the Year awards. There is a reason Larry Johnson, the Buckeyes Defensive Line Coach, is one of the highest paid assistants in college football. He’s the GOAT of coaching players that live in the Trenches.

A season ago the Chargers saw their franchise QB scrambling out of the pocket or taking big hits way too often. That was quickly addressed with Tom Telesco and Brandon Staley over the offseason. Herbert quickly earned the respect of his teammates by showing his toughness every week. If Herbert had any flaws his rookie year it was probably his ability to avoid some big hits. Herbert needs to learn to get down or out of bounds. It’s plays like this one below that have Chargers fans holding their breath. Then again, he did knock the defender out on the play, going back to his toughness.

Now, fast forward to this year and the Chargers added some much needed beef up front by signing Corey Linsley, an All-Pro Center with the Packers a season ago. Then they followed that up with signing Matt Feiler from the Steelers, who has played Right Tackle and Left Guard in his career. Telesco also brought in Oday Aboushi from the Detroit Lions who will most likely play Guard to start. Linsley, Aboushi, and Feiler have 181 combined starts in the NFL. Throw that in with Right Guard Bryan Bulaga’s 121 starts and you’ve made Herbert a very happy man! It gets even better for young Herby on draft night when they drafted his ‘Blindside’ tackle of the future, hopefully! Most fans wanted to see Penei Sewell slip but Rashawn Slater was ahead of Sewell on many draft boards. After watching more highlights, especially the Ohio State film and Chase Young, Chargers fans were sold.

Since games are won and lost in the trenches the Chase Young/Rashawn Slater will have some effect on this game. Most eyes, however, will be on Brandon Staley and his 1st taste of leading an NFL team. He’s as prepared as anyone for this opportunity. Just look up the quotes and opinions of everyone that has shared a room with him and you can see his passion, energy, and love for his players.
